9 Questions You Need to Ask to Know If Your Insurance Covers Your Hearing Aids

1. Is there a benefit in my policy to cover hearing aids/hearing care?

While every insurance policy is unique, many policies are catching up with the times and offering various coverage levels for hearing aids and hearing care services.

2. If so, what, and how much, does it cover?

This depends on your policy – each insurance provider is different in what they cover and how much that coverage will be. Our in-house insurance specialist is happy to help you find out exactly how much your policy covers, so you can access the hearing care you need.

3. Does my policy require that I meet a deductible and/or out-of-pocket amount before I receive benefits, and if so, how much?

Some policies do require a deductible being met before coverage benefits kick in. Depending on your insurer, you might have to pay a certain amount out of pocket that you can claim back with your insurance benefits. Check your policy with our insurance specialist to get more information on this.

4. How often does my coverage renew or replace my hearing aids?

Hearing aids often need repairing or replacing as you use them, just like with any sort of technology. Some insurance benefits offer help with replacing your devices, but that depends on your insurer and their hearing care coverage as a whole. Our insurance specialist can help you find answers to whether your hearing aid replacements will be covered.

5. Am I limited to network practices/providers, or can I choose my audiologist?

Some insurance providers place restrictions on who you can visit for your hearing care, but it depends on your specific plan and what coverage you’re allowed. If you’re curious as to what your insurance requires, our insurance specialist would be happy to help.

6. Does my preferred audiologist or clinic accept my insurance?

We’re partnered with Humana, United Healthcare, MedBen in Lawrenceburg, Medicare, BlueCross BlueShield, and Indiana Medicaid, but we also accept various other insurance policies. Feel free to contact our team and we’ll be able to answer any questions you have regarding whether your insurance is accepted or not.

7. Am I covered for diagnostic hearing evaluations?

Hearing assessments can be covered by certain insurance policies, but not all. Depending on your insurer, your hearing assessment could be entirely or partially covered by insurance. Our insurance specialist will be able to help you find out more.

8. Is a referral from a primary care physician required by my insurance?

Typically, an insurer would require a referral or some sort of proof that your hearing care and hearing aids are prescribed from a doctor, but that’s not always the case. For those who aren’t sure whether their insurance requires referrals or not, our insurance specialist can help go through the fine print for you.

9. Am I restricted to a generic brand/type of hearing aids, or can I get the ones I like?

Depending on your insurer, some hearing aid brands and types are covered, while others are not; it relies on your plan’s coverage whether you can access the hearing aid brands you’d like to wear or not. Our insurance specialist works in-house to help find answers for even the most complicated of insurance coverage plans.
