Does My MedBen FSA Cover Hearing Aids?

"As Lawrenceburg’s most trust doctor of audiology, I’m here to help my patients discover accessible hearing healthcare."

Living with an untreated hearing loss can be lonely and debilitating because it means missing out on all the small sounds that contribute to a good conversation, or the enjoyment of a good event, or a movie with loved ones.

Treating a hearing loss as soon as the first signs appear means not losing out on precious moments, and the sooner this happens, the better your long-term outcome.

When you treat your hearing loss, you quickly reduce the risk of cognitive decline, anxiety, and depression because your brain stays active and engaged. Hearing aids are one of the best methods of treatment.

Unfortunately, about two-thirds of people with a hearing loss delay or avoid getting their hearing treated because of fear of the cost. As Lawrenceburg’s most trust doctor of audiology, I’m here to help my patients discover accessible hearing healthcare.

One of the many ways to cover the cost is through your insurance plan. Some of our patients ask us if their MedBen flexible savings account (FSA) will covers the expense of a yearly hearing exam, prescription hearing aids, and professional hearing services.

Here’s what we can tell you about your MedBen hearing coverage.

MedBen Coverage of Hearing Aids and Hearing Care

The goal of any type of health insurance, supplemental insurance, or health savings account is to ensure that you will not have to scramble to find a way to pay for unexpected healthcare costs.

Flexible spending accounts are used to cover the cost of any type of expense that your health insurance plan does not cover, so your MedBen savings can be spent on your hearing treatment.

Your Health FSA will reimburse you for certain medical expenses that are not reimbursed by any other health plan you have. If it is a medical service, the IRS will let you use money from your MedBen tax-free FSA to cover it.

Hearing expenses eligible for payment under your FSA plan include:

  • Copayments for office visits
  • Deductibles
  • Coinsurance
  • Pre-existing hearing conditions
  • Hearing exams
  • Hearing aids fittings
  • Hearing aids – plus repairs and maintenance
  • Hearing aid batteries
  • ENT exams and CT or MRI scans
  • Over-the-counter hearing devices
  • Earwax removal products and eardrops
  • Earplugs – only to treat a medical condition
  • Speech therapy

While this list could change in accordance with IRS regulations, I think it’s unlikely.
