The Flex Audiology Show Episode 37: Practical Tips to Hear in a Noisy Restaurant

Sep 1, 2025

Effective communication in noisy environments can be quite a challenge. Whether it's a busy restaurant or a bustling event, background noise often makes it difficult to focus on conversations. If you have hearing aids, you might feel as if handling such environments is even more overwhelming.

On today’s episode of The Flex Audiology Show, we’re talking about some actionable tips you can use when you’re out to eat with loved ones. As someone who struggles with hearing in noise myself, I wanted to offer my tools of the trade so that you can have a more comfortable dining experience.

Timing Your Outings

Timing plays a crucial role in how you experience noise in public spaces. For optimal auditory comfort, consider visiting restaurants or venues during off-peak hours.

I have found that heading out between 4 PM and 6:30 PM can drastically reduce background noise, as you avoid the common rush around 7 PM. This simple adjustment not only enhances your ability to converse but may also lead to a more relaxed dining experience.

Choosing Your Seat Wisely

Upon arrival, be strategic about where you sit. Go for a booth when available, as they serve as natural barriers to sound, offering a quieter niche compared to open seating areas. Avoid seating near kitchens or live bands, as these spots tend to amplify ambient noise.

Picking a position facing away from loud noise sources capitalizes on the directional microphones in your hearing aids to focus on conversations ahead.

Effective Communication Techniques

When seated, make sure that the people you wish to talk with are directly in front of you or beside you, if not across the table. Make use of direct eye contact and facial cues to enhance your understanding of what’s being said.

Proper lighting further facilitates reading lips and catching subtle facial expressions, essential for those with hearing aids or natural hearing difficulties.

Even small adjustments like these can make a world of difference!

Use Assistive Listening Devices to Your Advantage

Hearing aids are fantastic companions in noisy environments, but sometimes, additional technology can provide that extra edge.

Consider using assisted listening devices such as Phonak's partner mic or the Roger device, which can serve as extensions to your hearing aids, directly transmitting audio to minimize background noise.

By clipping a remote mic to a companion's shirt, you can tune into their voice more clearly, boosting your conversational experience in a non-invasive way.

Harnessing the Full Potential of Your Hearing Aids

Your ability to hear in noisy settings depends on the technology you utilize.

Your personalized hearing aids are fundamentally steppingstones, and with additional accessories like remote mics and support from your loved ones, they can offer a specialized hearing experience that significantly elevates your engagement and satisfaction in social settings.

Enjoy Your Social Outings Confidently

Fear of noisy environments should never hinder your social life!

Timing, seating, communication strategies, and adaptive technology all work hand in hand to enhance your experience, allowing you to focus on what truly matters: enjoying the company around you.
