How Much Does a Hearing Test Really Cost? (Dr. Erica Person Explains)

Sep 30, 2025

When you begin your journey to better hearing, your first question is likely, “How much does a hearing test cost?”

This question often leads to confusion because a simple "hearing test" is not the same as a comprehensive assessment of your entire communication ability. By understanding the value of a comprehensive evaluation, you can make the best choice for your hearing and overall wellness.

On today’s episode of The Flex Audiology Show, I’ll be breaking down the answer for this often-asked question, as well as offering a local recommendation for a truly delicious restaurant nearby that took me back to my time in Louisiana!

The Difference Between a Test and an Assessment

You might think of a hearing test as the process where you sit in a sound booth, raise your hand when you hear a beep, and repeat a few words.

This barebones basic hearing test is certainly a starting point. It's inexpensive, or free at some retail locations, and it provides a quick but limited view of your ability to detect tones and some speech in a quiet environment.

However, if you are experiencing difficulty understanding conversations, asking people to repeat themselves, or struggling to communicate with loved ones, you are looking for a diagnosis, not just a data point.

You need to know the why behind your struggles and, more importantly, how to solve them.

When you seek a full diagnostic evaluation from an experienced audiologist, you benefit from a significantly deeper investigation into your auditory health.

Why a Full Assessment Best Serves Your Needs

When you call and ask, "How much does a hearing test cost?" it’s understandable that your focus is on the price.

Ultimately, you benefit most from a clear understanding of your hearing capabilities and a tailored plan for improvement. You can rest assured that our expert team is dedicated to providing that complete picture, giving you the best opportunity to engage fully in life.

A comprehensive hearing assessment goes far beyond the quiet sound booth to paint a complete picture of your hearing function and how it impacts your daily life.

When you choose this full assessment, you can rest assured that we are not simply testing your ability to hear but your ability to communicate successfully in the real world.

You’ll be assessed on how well you understand speech in background noise, your auditory processing skills, how different assistive listening accessories might integrate with your current hearing abilities, and more.

This is a significantly more robust and personalized process than the basic screening you might receive at a retail hearing aid store, which often focuses solely on fitting you with a product. Your health and communication are the priorities.

This is why you will see a higher fee associated with this service; it represents the value of advanced diagnostics and professional interpretation that is usually not covered by basic insurance plans.

Local Highlight: Fishtail Tavern in Hooven, Ohio

As part of our commitment to supporting the local community and helping you enjoy life to the fullest, we occasionally highlight local gems. After receiving a recommendation, we recently checked out the Fishtail Tavern in Hooven, Ohio.

If you are looking for a delicious meal, my family and I highly recommend checking them out!

Located just over the state line, this establishment was a pleasant surprise as we passed by the Cleaves grocery store. Despite Hooven being a small town, the Tavern was busy and packed when we arrived for a late Friday lunch: a clear sign of its popularity! The staff was friendly, the service was fast, and the atmosphere was welcoming.

We tried both the traditional Fish Cod Basket and the Fishlet Basket, finding the fish to be excellent. The menu also offers variety, including hot wings and burgers, so there is something for everyone, even if you are not a fish fan.

A unique element of their offering that truly stood out was their coleslaw with peanuts. I lived in Louisiana for a spell and found that peanuts on coleslaw was a staple down south, and seeing it here really took me back. If you’ve never tried this Southern-inspired dish, we encourage you to branch out and give it a try; it's a memorable addition!
