The Flex Audiology Show Episode 26: What Is Tinnitus? Part 1

Jun 6, 2025

Hi everyone, and welcome to another episode of The Flex Audiology Show!

Today we are going to talk about the differences between transient tinnitus and tinnitus that is either intermittent or chronic. There’s some important differences between the two, so keep an ear out to find out more!

Tinnitus is a condition that many people encounter, yet its nature can vary greatly. Understanding the differences between transient, intermittent, and chronic tinnitus can help you make informed decisions about your hearing health and explore appropriate solutions.

What Is Transient Tinnitus?

Transient tinnitus is something you might have experienced without realizing it had a name. Picture this: You suddenly hear a sound, maybe a "ping" or a low roar, and then feel a slight fullness in your ear. It might seem like your hearing dims for a few moments.

This is transient tinnitus, a brief and often harmless condition that resolves on its own in just a few seconds to minutes. You're not alone in this experience, as it's a common occurrence.

Intermittent Tinnitus: Understanding True Tinnitus

When tinnitus lingers beyond a few fleeting moments, we start venturing into what is known as true tinnitus, which often doesn’t resolve itself on its own.

This can be classified as intermittent tinnitus if the sounds appear sporadically. Sometimes you might hear a hum, a buzz, or perhaps even a hissing sound. These occur not because of an external noise, but internally within your ears.

Intermittent tinnitus might recur several times throughout your day or week and last for hours during each episode, making it noticeable and possibly bothersome. This intermittent nature is what distinguishes it from more continuous forms of tinnitus.

Chronic Tinnitus: A Persistent Sound

Chronic tinnitus manifests as a constant sound in your ears. Imagine hearing a continuous hum or ring all day, every day, with only brief moments of relief.

This is not merely an inconvenience; it can significantly affect your quality of life. For many, chronic tinnitus persists beyond six months, becoming a part of their everyday existence.

Numerous patients grapple with chronic tinnitus, and it's often this persistent kind of tinnitus that leads individuals to seek professional help. Understanding its impact on your life is a critical first step toward managing this condition.
