Why Video Otoscopy Matters to You 

When it comes to maintaining your hearing health, knowing what’s happening inside your ears is crucial so that your hearing assessment provides the most concise results. 

Video otoscopy provides you with a clear visual understanding of your ear canals. You benefit from this procedure by gaining insights into the state of your ear health without any guesswork.

The Process of Video Otoscopy Explained 

During a video otoscopy session, your audiologist will use a specialized device equipped with a camera to examine your ear canal. This device projects a live image onto a screen, allowing both you and the audiologist to see the interior of your ear.  

Typically, the procedure begins with the audiologist gently inserting a specula-equipped otoscope into your ear canal. Looking inside my own ear for this video was pretty gross, but it’s an important step for your hearing evaluation. 

You may notice the presence of earwax, or cerumen, on the screen; this is completely normal and part of your ear’s natural defense system. If a blockage of wax is affecting your hearing, we can take care of it for you. 

What You Can Learn About Your Ear Health 

Your video otoscopy session provides valuable information about your ear condition. You can rest assured knowing that conditions like excessive earwax, potential infections, or any structural abnormalities will be clearly visible.  

The presence of scar tissue, often a remnant from previous ear infections or other ear conditions, can also be identified. Moreover, if you experience allergies or frequent sinus issues, the otoscopy may reveal redness due to inflammation. 

When I was a child, we put corn oil in our ears to fight ear infections, and it would burn pretty bad – when we looked in my ear, some scar tissue was present, likely because of that.  

Understanding the Limitations 

While video otoscopy is a powerful diagnostic tool, it does have limitations; despite how advanced this procedure is, it cannot determine whether you need hearing aids. That requires comprehensive audiometric testing in a sound booth.  

Video otoscopy primarily helps in identifying blockages or anatomical issues that might impede sound transmission. What we’re looking for is an earwax blockage or perhaps a perforated eardrum. Then we can tailor your hearing assessment to reflect what your ears need the most. 

What to Expect After a Video Otoscopy 

After your otoscopy, if any concerns are noted, you will receive guidance on the next steps. This could involve referrals to other healthcare specialists or additional diagnostic tests to further evaluate your hearing condition.
