The Flex Audiology Show Episode 34 - Deep Cleaning Hearing Aids – What We Do & Why It Matters

Aug 21, 2025

Welcome back to The Flex Audiology Show! Today we’re answering a question that I get a lot: why do we need to deep clean hearing aids? Why does it matter?

When it comes to ensuring optimal performance and longevity for your hearing aids, regular deep cleaning is a crucial aspect often overlooked. You may think that cleaning your devices at home is sufficient, but understanding the professional level of care provided can make a significant difference.

Upon arrival at our clinic, you're greeted by our friendly front office staff, who will take your hearing aids. Behind the scenes, our team embarks on a comprehensive cleaning journey that you'll rarely find replicated at home.

Our in-depth, professional cleaning process goes beyond what you can achieve with typical at-home maintenance, ensuring that your devices are squeaky clean – and could save you costly repairs in the long run.

The Importance of Changing Hearing Aid Domes

The small domes on your hearing aids should be changed periodically, anywhere from once a quarter to every six months.

Over time, these domes can begin to swell due to friction; if not addressed, they could come off and become lodged in your ear, potentially leading to infections.

Consistent replacement of these domes ensures you're safeguarding your hearing health against preventable issues.

Keep Your Filters Fresh

Another essential component of your hearing aids is the filters, which protect against earwax buildup, allowing your hearing aids to function efficiently.

With a standard pack containing eight filters, regular changing is imperative. By maintaining clean filters, you preserve the clarity and quality of sound while preventing potentially damaging wax clogs.

Advanced Cleaning Equipment at Your Service

You might handle dome and filter changeovers at home, but our professional services go further using specialized cleaning equipment.

One of the standout features of our professional cleaning process is the use of the Redux vacuum chamber, adept at reaching areas that are otherwise neglected in typical home cleaning.

It ensures wax and debris are thoroughly removed from behind filters and microphone ports, areas crucial to your hearing aids’ functionality; it also helps with removing moisture and humidity from your devices.

The Redux vacuum chamber is especially useful for reviving hearing aids that have encountered water damage, restoring them to optimal performance.

Even if you’re in an environment with moderate humidity like here in Indiana, regular use of the vacuum chamber shows phenomenal results.

Why Routine Maintenance Matters

Over time, your hearing aids are susceptible to accumulations of earwax, skin, oil, dirt, and debris that can impair function. Such buildup can lead to muffled sounds, distorted audio, and even device failure. Routine professional maintenance can prevent nearly all hearing aid breakdowns. Think of it like regular dental checkups; by keeping up with routine maintenance, you avoid larger, costlier repairs down the road.

Professional Maintenance: A Wise Choice

Let’s face it: some tasks are better left to professionals.

While you can manage basic cleaning tasks at home, our specialized care enhances your hearing aids' lives and performance. From tackling wax and debris unseen by the naked eye, our meticulous process ensures each component is spotless.

When you choose professional maintenance, you’re investing in prolonging your hearing aids’ lives and quality of sound.
